As summer wanes, our spirits are in transition to colder, darker, better days. Rum is a spirit that soldiers on into Fall/Winter. This one is turn of the last century old, a president among cocktails. Time to tip one. #cocktails  🍸🍹

Presidente

Potion:
  • 1 1/2 oz White Rum
  • 1 oz Dry Vermouth
  • 1/2 oz Clement Creole Shrub
  • Scant barspoon homemade Grenadine
  • 2 drops 20% Saline
  • 1 Dash Orange Bitters
  • 1 Dash Angostura Bitters
Procedure:
Chill a coupe or Nick and Nora glass. Add the ingredients sans garnish to a mixing glass. Add ice and stir until ice cold. Express the oils in the peel, tools in, and enjoy. Also, blistering that peel would be nice here.
I suspect most white rims are okay - especially Cubans. I used Planteray 3 Star as it's what I had. Some recipes will split the base between Cuban rum and an agricole. Here, we essentially do that as Clement Creole Shrub is an agricole base.
You could however just use a Curaçao or even  triple Sec. Up the Vermouth to 1 1/2 oz and use a barspoon of Curaçao if so. A Blanc Vermouth (e.g., Dolin) is also good here depending on the balance you want. All the great ones have an orange hue. 😎
